May 13-19 - National Family & Life Week
“[Love] bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” (1 Corinthians 13.7)
As a Catholic school community, the Dufferin-Peel CDSB affirms the sacred character of human life. ‘National Family and Life Week’ is an opportunity to celebrate this. All life is sacred and we are called to serve and to love one another. Respect for life means that all human beings have value and deserve to be treated with dignity and respect from the eldest to the youngest; from those who are strong and healthy to those who are vulnerable because of illness or disabilities; and from those who can speak for themselves to those who cannot. As a Catholic community, we will celebrate this call as we work together to nurture and empower our students and one another to stand up for those who are most vulnerable. The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) extends an invitation to families, parishes, dioceses, and faith communities to celebrate together the Annual ‘National Family and Life Week’, this year being celebrated from May 13 – May 19, 2024. National Family & Life Week (NFLW), is an invitation to the faithful in Canada to celebrate the joy and beauty of family and life by seeking out new and creative ways to live out this call in our daily lives. The theme for this year is “Love hopes all things,” which is taken from Saint Paul’s hymn on love in 1 Corinthians 13.7: “[Love] bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.”  This description of love is also at the heart of Pope Francis’s reflection on the dynamics of spousal and family love in the Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation Amoris Laetitia.  Love is at the heart of familial relationships and our families are a communion of love in Christ. The family has been called to be a community of life and love, where a relationship with our Lord, Jesus Christ, is fostered and becomes a source and witness of hope for the whole world.  We are “guardians of life” when we love one another within our families, as well as in wider society when we show kindness toward and care for the vulnerable and marginalized. During the week of May 13-19, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board will invite staff and students to celebrate the sacred character of human life as lived out in family life through the various resources provided by the CCCB’s Office for Family and Life. Resources and links to resources will be made available to schools prior to that week thus enabling schools to prepare for the week.
