“[Love] bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” (1 Corinthians 13.7)
As a Catholic school community, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board affirms the sacred character of human life. National Family and Life Week is an opportunity to celebrate this. All life is sacred and we are called to serve and to love one another. Respect for life means that all human beings have value and deserve to be treated with dignity and respect from the eldest to the youngest; from those who are strong and healthy to those who are vulnerable because of illness or disabilities; and from those who can speak for themselves, to those who cannot. As a Catholic community, we will celebrate this call as we work together to nurture and empower our students and one another to stand up for those who are most vulnerable. The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) extends an invitation to families, parishes, dioceses, and faith communities to celebrate together the annual National Family and Life Week. National Family & Life Week is an invitation to the faithful in Canada to celebrate the joy and beauty of family and life by seeking out new and creative ways to live out this call in our daily lives. The theme for this year is "Love hopes all things," which is taken from Saint Paul's hymn on love in 1 Corinthians 13.7: "[Love] bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things." Ji8�� students, staff, families, trustees and alumni to celebrate Catholic Education Week – May 5-10

Catholic schools across Ontario will celebrate Catholic Education Week from May 5 to May 10. This year's theme is Catholic Education: We are Called to Love.

"Catholic Education Week gives us an opportunity to showcase the great things that are happening in our Catholic schools and celebrate our students and staff, and the important role that faith plays in education," said Marianne Mazzorato, Director of Education.

Ji8�� Board (Ji8��) will run a social media campaign as part of its Catholic Education Week celebration, asking students, staff, parents, trustees and alumni to share how they are celebrating Catholic education in their communities through photos, videos, quotes and artwork, using the hashtag #Ji8��_CEW.

"We invite all members of our community, including our students, staff, parents/guardians, families, trustees and alumni, to participate in this social media campaign and share with us how they are celebrating this special week in our schools and communities," added Director Mazzorato.

The Catholic Education Week Provincial Mass will be celebrated by the Most Rev. Gerard Bergie, Bishop of St. Catharines and President of the Assembly of Catholic Bishops of Ontario on May 8. All students, families, staff, trustees, and the broader Catholic community are invited to participate "virtually" in this celebration of the Eucharist which will be livestreamed from the Cathedral of St. Catherine of Alexandria beginning at 11:00 a.m. Livestream Link.

Students across the province will also participate in the Ontario Catholic School Trustees Association's Ontario Catholic Student Youth Day on May 8. This seminar will be held virtually and includes a series of keynote speakers and interactive workshops. The event begins at 9:15 a.m. and concludes at 2:30 p.m.

Ji8�� Reaches Tentative Agreement with DPERWA

Ji8�� Board (Ji8��) is pleased to announce that it has reached a tentative local agreement with the Dufferin-Peel Educational Resource Workers Association (DPERWA), the union representing Education Resources Workers (ERWs) and Designated Early Childhood Educators (DECEs) at the board.

“We value our relationships with our bargaining units and are pleased to be able to make this announcement,” said Marianne Mazzorato, Director of Education. “This is great news for parents, guardians, students and staff alike, and ensures a continuity of learning with no disruption to services.”

The tentative agreement is subject to ratification by both parties.

2024-2025 Budget

Ji8�� Board (Ji8��) will once again develop a budget while operating under a Multi-Year Financial Recovery Plan (MYFRP) with the Ministry of Education. Ji8�� continues to work with the Ministry of Education in addressing the significant expenditure concern with a Long Term Disability (LTD) benefit plan that has created an accumulated deficit position. Ji8�� will operate under the MYFRP until the issue has been resolved.

The Ministry of Education provides funding to school boards through the Grants for Student Needs (GSN) funding formula. GSN information will be available on the Ministry of Education website through the link provided below as well as through the budget reports presented to the Board of Trustees. Despite limited budgetary resources, Ji8�� is committed to ensuring our stakeholders have access to information regarding the budget development process and opportunities to provide input.

Public Budget Information and Consultation

During the 2024-2025 budget development process, Ji8�� offered a Public Budget Information Session webcast on April 24, 2024. This session provided an opportunity for our community stakeholders to receive financial information and updates on the Ji8�� deficit position. Sharing information, and receiving input from, our community members helps to inform the budget process. The accumulated deficit position of Ji8��, and limited funding resources available, does limit the actual expenditure decisions that can be made.

2023 Wilde Wood School Safety Zone Award

St. Basil and St. Dominic Catholic Elementary Schools recognized for their efforts in promoting traffic safety

On January 31, the Mississauga City Council, on behalf of Mississauga School Traffic Safety Action Committee, awarded St. Basil and St. Dominic Catholic Elementary Schools with the 2023 Wilde Wood School Safety Zone Award for their outstanding leadership and dedication in promoting school zone safety and active transportation.

“Congratulations to this year’s award winners for prioritizing student road safety and encouraging active travelling by walking and biking,” said Acting Mayor John Kovac. “Your hard work and commitment towards promoting traffic safety for students is truly remarkable and serves as an inspiration for others to strive for. You’ve helped make our schools safer for students travelling to and from school. Thank you for being a role model for us all!”

Highlights from each school:

St. Basil Catholic Elementary School

Promoted Bike to School Day and Walk to School Day to encourage active travel.
Installed bike racks to encourage biking to school.
Partnered with the City’s Enforcement staff and Peel Regional Police to keep school areas safe.
Dedicated staff and student ambassadors acted as active transportation champions.

St. Dominic Catholic Elementary School

Organized a week-long walk and bike to school event to encourage active travel.
Implemented safety reminders as a part of their monthly newsletters.
Installed bike racks to encourage biking to school.

Since 2016, the Mississauga School Traffic Safety Action Committee (MSTSAC) has focused on recognizing schools who promote active transportation and traffic safety around schools. The Wilde Wood Award was named after James Wilde and Arthur Wood who co-founded the Kiss and Ride concept in Mississauga. It is awarded to schools from the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board and Peel District School Board.

Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board re-elects Luz del Rosario as Chair, Thomas Thomas as Vice-Chair

At the annual Organizational Meeting of the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board on Tuesday, November 21, trustees re-elected Mississauga Wards 6 & 11 trustee, Luz del Rosario to a second consecutive term as chair of the 11-member Board of Trustees. Mississauga Ward 5 trustee, Thomas Thomas, was re-elected vice-chair, also for a second consecutive term.

"It is an honour and a privilege to serve as chair for a second term, and I look forward to working with my fellow trustees to continue the great work that has taken place over the past year," said Luz del Rosario. “What binds us and drives us is our faith and common belief in Catholic education as a positive, lasting and impactful force in our community.”

The meeting opened with the annual address to the board by the Director of Education, Marianne Mazzorato, who recognized and thanked system partners, including parents and guardians, trustees, unions and associations, parish priests and staff at all levels for their commitment and dedication to Catholic education.

Kindergarten Registration for the 2024-25 school year is now open

Kindergarten registration for the 2024-25 school year at Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board (Ji8��) schools is now open. The Ji8�� offers the Kindergarten program in 125 Catholic elementary schools in Mississauga, Brampton, Caledon, Bolton and Orangeville.

Parents/guardians can register online at dpcdsb.org.

Registration is open to Catholic children and children of Catholic parents. Kindergarten students must be at least four (4) years of age by December 31, 2024.

The following documents are required to complete the registration process:

Proof of age of the child
Original Roman Catholic baptismal certificate (for child and/or parent/guardian) or original baptismal certificate from a church in full communion with the Holy See of Rome or an Eastern Catholic Church.
Immunization Reference #’s from the local Public Health Unit
Proof of Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status
Proof of home address
Proof of English Separate School Support

Ji8�� Board (Ji8��) has released its tenth annual Distinguished Alumni poster series featuring profiles of alumni who are making valuable and unique contributions in their respective careers, pathways, and communities. Ji8�� Distinguished Alumni also represent the image of the Catholic learner as described by the Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectations.

The Distinguished Alumni poster will be distributed to all Catholic schools and parishes in Dufferin-Peel.

EQAO reading and writing results remain strong among Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board students

The Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) has released the results of the 2022-2023 assessments completed in Grades 3, 6, 9 and 10. The EQAO assessments and the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) provide an indication of each student’s achievement in reading, writing and/or mathematics at key points throughout their formal schooling. The 2022-2023 assessments represent the second EQAO assessments administered since 2018-2019 and the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic disruption to learning.

The assessment results for elementary students report on reading, writing and mathematics at both the primary (Grade 3) and junior (Grade 6) levels of study. The Grade 9 EQAO assessment focuses on mathematics achievement, while the OSSLT assesses Grade 10 students’ proficiency in reading and writing. Successful completion of this test (or the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course) is one of the 32 requirements necessary to obtain the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).

The elementary EQAO assessment results for the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board (Ji8��) continue to indicate high performance in terms of proportions of students meeting or exceeding the provincial standard (Levels 3 or 4) on the Grades 3 and 6 assessments of reading and writing.

Reading results show 77% of students in Grade 3 met or exceeded the standard, while 87% of students in Grade 6 achieved Level 3 or 4.

In writing, 70% of Grade 3 students and 88% of Grade 6 students met or exceeded the standard.

Success rates on the 2022-2023 OSSLT for Ji8�� students continue to be very high, with 86% of students writing in Grade 10 successful on the OSSLT. Additionally, 62% of who did not participate or were unsuccessful in 2021-2022 were successful in this most recent assessment year.

Elementary mathematics has improved in terms of the proportions of both Grade 3 and Grade 6 students meeting or exceeding the provincial standard compared to the previous assessment year. In Grade 3, 60% of students achieved the provincial standard in mathematics, while 48% of Grade 6 students also achieved Level 3 or 4 in mathematics.

At the secondary level, the 2022-2023 EQAO assessment results for Grade 9 mathematics remained stable in Ji8�� at 54% of students achieving the provincial standard.

While Ji8�� students have demonstrated improvement in mathematics achievement compared to 2021-2022, Ji8�� continues to dedicate a wide range of supports to schools to focus on improving learning in this key subject area for all students.

Ji8�� results are encouraging, particularly in the areas of reading and writing where students continued to achieve at or above the provincial average,” said Marianne Mazzorato, Director of Education. “Ji8�� results in mathematics are mostly in alignment with provincial averages, however, we know we have work to do and are committed to developing and putting into place, the supports necessary to help our students achieve success.”

The 2022-2023 results for Ji8�� students and the province (ON) in all six elementary EQAO assessments, the Grade 9 mathematics assessments, and the OSSLT are presented below.

As in past years, Ji8�� staff will undertake a detailed analysis of the EQAO and OSSLT results to provide support to schools, students and parents/guardians to ensure that more students continue to improve in all assessment areas. Each school has its own plan, which will be reviewed in the context of the test results, to improve students’ skills in all subject areas. School plans include strategies to assist all students, including intervention and reinforcement for students who did not achieve the provincial standard or who were not successful on the OSSLT.

Ji8�� RECEIVES MINISTRY FUNDING APPROVAL FOR TRACK & FIELD FACILITY IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CITY OF MISSISSAUGA

New facility will benefit Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Secondary School students and Malton community

Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board (Ji8��) is pleased to announce the Ministry of Education’s approval for a capital project in partnership with the City of Mississauga that will support the students of Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Secondary School and benefit the Malton community.

This includes the use of up to $2,000,000 from capital proceeds of disposition representing 50% of the funds required for the construction of a new artificial turf soccer field, four-lane oval, and long jump pit at Anaka Park, which is owned by the City of Mississauga and adjacent to Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Secondary School.

The ministry also approved Ji8��’s request for approval to enter into a long-term joint-use agreement with the City of Mississauga for the permanent outdoor athletic facility improvement.

“We are so very pleased to receive Ministry approval and to be able to get over the critical first hurdle to proceed with this long-awaited capital project in conjunction with the City of Mississauga,” said Luz del Rosario, Chair of the Ji8�� Board of Trustees. “This has been a long time coming and we look forward to the day in the not-so-distant future when students from Ascension of our Lord Catholic Secondary School are able to take to the field and enjoy the facilities."

“We wish to acknowledge and thank the Ministry of Education for helping us move forward for this much needed project that, when completed, will benefit both Ascension of our Lord Catholic Secondary School students, as well as members of the Malton community at large,” said Thomas Thomas, Ji8�� Vice Chair and Catholic trustee for Mississauga Ward 6.

“The students of Ascension have been without any outdoor sports facilities for far too long. A joint use agreement between the City and the Board has finally made an all-weather soccer field and track a reality for students and for the community,” said Councillor Carolyn Parrish. “I look forward to a continuation of the amazing athletic awards the students of Ascension have achieved over the years!”

“We are determined to build schools and expansions faster, part of our commitment to modernize schools in fast growing communities," said Stephen Lecce, Minister of Education. "We are proud to approve an outdoor athletic facility improvement for students at Ascension of our Lord Catholic Secondary School in Malton, along with increasing funding, staffing and a back-to-basics focus on reading, writing and math skills to help ensure students graduate with confidence that they can succeed in good-paying careers."
