Do you want to be an important part of the healthcare system by delivering basic medical office services?
The Medical Office Co-op Program will provide you the opportunity to:
- Develop job search skills, write a resume, practice interviewing skills and the ability to research a variety of companies for a planned learning experiential (co-op placement)
- Understand the essential skills required in a medical office with a variety of clerical tasks including scheduling appointments, word processing, billing, filing, and answering the phone
- Focus on decision making, self-management and teamwork, conflict and negotiation, legislation governing workplace issues, culture and diversity
- Learn effective medical communication skills, social ethics and responsibility practiced in Canada
- Obtain valuable job training and experiences at an entry level unpaid co-op placement
- Develop skills necessary to network effectively and gain potential professional Canadian references
- Earn four optional Ontario Secondary School Credits
Classroom Learning (7 weeks) - During classroom learning, learners will earn two credits simultaneously: EBT4OH – Business and Technological Communication in Healthcare and Navigating the Workplace (GLN4O1)
Course #1
EBT4OH Business and Technological Communication in Healthcare
This course will equip students to utilize the language to communicate information, in both written and verbal format, within the healthcare environment. It will introduce medical terms and abbreviations with corresponding definitions, spelling, and pronunciation. Students will complete online training courses to understand basic health practices and techniques in health care. They will integrate graphics, text, and algorithms to demonstrate an understanding in healthcare communications. They will also make several oral and visual (Power Point) presentations based on healthcare resources.

GLN4O1 Navigating the Workplace
This course provides students with opportunities to develop the workplace essential skills and work habits required for success in a medical office environment. Students will explore occupations and careers of interest through participation in real workplace experiences. They will make plans for continued learning and employment, work with others to design learning experiences, and investigate the resources and supports required to make a smooth transition to postsecondary destinations
Regular attendance is necessary to ensure success in the program, learners need to be committed to their goals.
Co-operative Education Placement (7 weeks, unpaid)
Adult learners who have successfully completed the theory portion and the interview process will earn credits and get relevant planned learning experience (co-op placement) in a medical environment.
The co-operative education program includes: the classroom component and community component.
The classroom component ensures that students are:
- Prepared for their community experience, demonstrating the skills and knowledge required before the start of their community component
- Focused on integrating their learning throughout the course
The community component ensures that students are:
- Placed in a planned learning experience within the community to inquire and reflect on their experiences to gain a greater knowledge of themselves and their opportunities
- Able to develop, practice and refine the skills, knowledge and expectations that reflect current workplace practices and standards.
The co-op community component (placement) is not paid. The adult learner will research co-op placements in partnership with teachers. To secure a placement the adult learner must be interviewed.
