EQAO reading and writing results remain strong among Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board students
The Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) has released the results of the 2022-2023 assessments completed in Grades 3, 6, 9 and 10. The EQAO assessments and the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) provide an indication of each student鈥檚 achievement in reading, writing and/or mathematics at key points throughout their formal schooling. The 2022-2023 assessments represent the second EQAO assessments administered since 2018-2019 and the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic disruption to learning.
The assessment results for elementary students report on reading, writing and mathematics at both the primary (Grade 3) and junior (Grade 6) levels of study. The Grade 9 EQAO assessment focuses on mathematics achievement, while the OSSLT assesses Grade 10 students鈥� proficiency in reading and writing. Successful completion of this test (or the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course) is one of the 32 requirements necessary to obtain the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).
The elementary EQAO assessment results for the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board (Ji8福利网) continue to indicate high performance in terms of proportions of students meeting or exceeding the provincial standard (Levels 3 or 4) on the Grades 3 and 6 assessments of reading and writing.
Reading results show 77% of students in Grade 3 met or exceeded the standard, while 87% of students in Grade 6 achieved Level 3 or 4.
In writing, 70% of Grade 3 students and 88% of Grade 6 students met or exceeded the standard.
Success rates on the 2022-2023 OSSLT for Ji8福利网 students continue to be very high, with 86% of students writing in Grade 10 successful on the OSSLT. Additionally, 62% of who did not participate or were unsuccessful in 2021-2022 were successful in this most recent assessment year.
Elementary mathematics has improved in terms of the proportions of both Grade 3 and Grade 6 students meeting or exceeding the provincial standard compared to the previous assessment year. In Grade 3, 60% of students achieved the provincial standard in mathematics, while 48% of Grade 6 students also achieved Level 3 or 4 in mathematics.
At the secondary level, the 2022-2023 EQAO assessment results for Grade 9 mathematics remained stable in Ji8福利网 at 54% of students achieving the provincial standard.
While Ji8福利网 students have demonstrated improvement in mathematics achievement compared to 2021-2022, Ji8福利网 continues to dedicate a wide range of supports to schools to focus on improving learning in this key subject area for all students.
Ji8福利网 results are encouraging, particularly in the areas of reading and writing where students continued to achieve at or above the provincial average,鈥� said Marianne Mazzorato, Director of Education. 鈥淛i8福利网 results in mathematics are mostly in alignment with provincial averages, however, we know we have work to do and are committed to developing and putting into place, the supports necessary to help our students achieve success.鈥�
The 2022-2023 results for Ji8福利网 students and the province (ON) in all six elementary EQAO assessments, the Grade 9 mathematics assessments, and the OSSLT are presented below. 鈥�

As in past years, Ji8福利网 staff will undertake a detailed analysis of the EQAO and OSSLT results to provide support to schools, students and parents/guardians to ensure that more students continue to improve in all assessment areas. Each school has its own plan, which will be reviewed in the context of the test results, to improve students鈥� skills in all subject areas. School plans include strategies to assist all students, including intervention and reinforcement for students who did not achieve the provincial standard or who were not successful on the OSSLT.
