Ji8¸£ÀûÍø Board welcomes and embraces the rich cultural and linguistic diversity that our English Language Learners bring to our school communities. Students are encouraged to maintain their cultural and linguistic traditions by speaking, reading and writing in their home language(s).  Continued literacy development in first languages strengthens second language acquisition.

Supporting English Language Acquisition 

Ji8¸£ÀûÍø Board offers support to students whose first language is a language other than English or is a variety of English significantly different from that used for instruction in Ontario schools.

Language Proficiency Assessment in Schools  

STEP or Steps to English Proficiency:

  1. STEP is a Ministry resource used by Dufferin-Peel to track the English proficiency of our ELLs.
  2. STEP levels are NOT USED to determine report card grades. (STEP – A Guide for Users, pgs. 10 & 25).

English Language Acquisition Programs and Services:


Elementary Support Models: 

Based on the results of individual STEP assessments, the ESL/ELD teacher and classroom teacher will determine the support model that best meets the language learning and academic needs of each English Language Learner (ELL).  These models may include:

Based on the results of individual STEP assessments, the ESL/ELD teacher and classroom teacher will determine the support model that best meets the language learning and academic needs of each English language learner (ELL).  These models may include:

Recommendations for course levels are based on English language proficiency (STEP Assessment) and not age or grade.

Up to three ESL or ELD course can count towards the four compulsory English courses required for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma. For more information, please see Pathways to English flowchart and ESL and ELD Course Descriptions.

ESL/ELD Resource SupportEnglish language learners (ELLs) may have access to support in an ESL/ELD Resource Room. A qualified ESL/ELD teacher will assist ELLs with understanding assignments and course content. Students will also have access to electronic devices such as a computer. Availability of the ESL/ELD Resource room is determined at the school level.

Monitoring and Consultation

 

The ESL/ELD teacher and the subject teachers collaborate regularly to discuss student progress and academic challenges. Necessary accommodations and/or modifications are implemented to ensure student success.​
