Community Advertising Materials for Parents/Guardians

The Board and its schools no longer distribute advertising and promotional materials from external organizations directly to parents "through the backpack."

The Board will continue to review requests from external organizations for posting advertising/promotional materials on its website for parents/guardians. Only materials from not-for-profit, community-based organizations that benefit children and families will be considered.

External individuals or organizations seeking authorization to post advertising/promotional materials on the Board website, are asked to send their requests with a copy of the promotional material to communications@dpcdsb.org.

PLEASE NOTE: Ji8�� Board makes these materials available for informational purposes only, with no intention to recommend, endorse or provide determinations of suitability in respect to any product or service listed on this site.

Catholic Community, Culture and Caring Initiatives

Online Reporting Tool: The online reporting tool is now available board-wide and has proven useful. It can be found on every school website and is intended for Dufferin-Peel students to report bullying incidents and negative behaviours impacting the school community.

CCCC School Climate Survey: Catholic Community, Culture and Caring (CCCC) School Climate Survey is administered every two years to elementary and secondary students. The results help us to determine areas of planning focus with regards to safety, well-being, equity and inclusivity in our school communities.

CCCC School Climate Teams: School teams have been developed in response to our Catholic Board Learning Plan’s call to create safe, inclusive, caring environments. These teams share and develop safe school strategies based on the results from the School Climate surveys, Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectations and Virtues program.

Keeping Students Safe: Ji8��’s Framework and Response to Human Trafficking
“Human Trafficking is an unjustifiable violation of the victims’ freedom and dignity, which are integral dimensions of the human person willed and created by God. This is why it must be considered, without a doubt, a crime against humanity.” - Pope Francis

Ji8�� remains committed to promoting safety in schools. The Ontario Ministry of Education has provided school boards with a policy direction (PPM 166) to develop and implement a protocol to respond to suspected human trafficking occurrences. In response, Ji8�� has implemented prevention and intervention strategies to respond effectively and to support students who may be at risk of human trafficking.

Human trafficking is a serious criminal offence under the Criminal Code of Canada. Human trafficking may include recruiting, harbouring or controlling a person’s movements using force, physical or psychological coercion, or deception and forcing them into labour or sexual services.

Increasing awareness and resources for parents are key components of Ji8��’s human trafficking prevention strategy. Ji8�� provides regular training and updated resources to staff on anti- human trafficking and available school and community supports. Anti-human trafficking resources, training materials for staff and prevention materials will be reviewed regularly.

Bullying Prevention and Awareness Week (November 2022)

School Safety Planning: The School Safety Committee is a group of community partners working together to increase safety in the Region of Peel. Traffic congestion continues to increase in our communities; health and safety of our students are paramount concerns in these times. Dufferin-Peel has worked with a variety of community partners such as Peel Regional Police, Peel District School Board, Peel Health, Bike Brampton, to promote walking and biking to school with continued momentum. The benefits of walking and physical activity is positively linked to physical and mental health, as well as academic performance. A series of three short videos have been created through this partnership to support the work our schools are doing in helping parents understand the importance of using Kiss’n Ride safely, reducing traffic congestion and finding alternative ways of getting to school.

Equity in Pedagogy Workshop Series: This three-part workshop series addresses a variety of issues related to diversity, equity and inclusion within the context of creating Catholic conditions for learning. Participants are challenged to re-think the manner in which they deliver curriculum, address student needs and respond to our diverse communities. The series aims to create a safe and inclusive space where participants come together as a professional learning community. Through inquiry based learning, staff have an opportunity to dialogue, share, learn and develop strategies to address current issues and topics surrounding equity and inclusivity within our Ji8�� community.

Mental Health and Well-Being Guiding Framework (2022-2025): Global events over the past few years have affected the daily lives of all students and families, creating a need for Ji8�� to be responsive to student well-being. The Ji8�� approach to mental health and well-being is faith-based, inspired by scripture, and rooted in human dignity. In line with Catholic Social Teaching, there is preferential concern for those most in need.

The Mental Health and Well-Being Guiding Framework 2022-2025 shows how Ji8�� will respond to students’ needs to be validated, motivated, and feel a sense of belonging. Well-being strategies are positioned as the foundational work of all staff to welcome and include students, to understand them, to promote mentally healthy habits, and create a supportive learning environment in which all students can thrive. The Mental Health and Well-Being Guiding Framework builds on the previous Guiding Framework, is an extension of the Board’s Multi-Year Strategic Plan, a reflection of student voice, and an articulation of the plan to help each student excel. “The God of all grace will restore, support, strengthen, and establish you” (1 Peter 5:10)

Ji8�� Mental Health Annual Action Plan 2023-2024
Accompanying the Mental Health and Well-Being Guiding Framework is the Ji8�� Mental Health Annual Action Plan 2023-2024. Developed yearly, this plan outlines the system priorities and key actions for how staff will promote and mental health and well-being and respond to student, family, and caregiver needs.

Important Immunization Message from Peel Public Health

Peel Public Health regularly reviews immunization records of all students in the Dufferin-Peel Catholic School Board.

To ensure that everyone has the required immunizations, Peel Public Health must have a record that shows that your child has had all the required infant/initial and booster doses of vaccine for measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, tetanus, polio, pertussis, meningococcal, and varicella (varicella if born 2010 and later) according to the Ontario Immunization Schedule.

When your child registered for school, you provided a copy of your child’s immunization record. The school sent this information to Peel Public Health. After registration, parents are responsible to keep their child’s immunization record up to date with Peel Public Health. Your child’s record may still be incomplete if the record you submitted at registration did not show that your child has had all the required vaccines, or if your child has become due for another vaccine since then.

Under the Immunization of School Pupils Act, the Health Department has the authority to suspend students from school if they do not meet the immunization requirements. Therefore students whose immunization records are incomplete will be suspended from school.

School councils play a vital role in the education system in Ontario. They provide a forum through which parents and other members of school communities can contribute to improving student achievement and school performance.

In 2000-2001, the Ontario government took significant steps to ensure that parents, through their school councils, would have greater influence in their children’s education. Regulations were created that confirm the advisory role of school councils and clearly state that their purpose is to improve student achievement and enhance the accountability of the education system to parents.

School councils are now able to make recommendations to their principals and school boards on any matter. Principals and school boards, in turn, must consult with school councils on a variety of matters that affect student learning. They must also consider recommendations made by school councils and report back to the councils on how they plan to act.

Email and Text Messaging for Secondary School Unexplained Student Absences and Secondary School Broadcast Messages

For parent/guardian contacts of Secondary School students that already receive unexplained student absence and school broadcast messages, we have launched a new service which allows us to deliver phone, email and text messages for:

student absences (when the school is not notified by phone or note prior to 8:00 am on the day or the absence)

There are now 3 options for receiving these messages:

Phone Call - We will still send out automated phone messages for unexplained student absences, important school events, school closings and safety alerts.

NEW - Email Message - You must be the Primary contact and we must have an email address on file for you to receive email messages for unexplained student absences, important school events, school closings and safety alerts. Please refer to the “To Receive Email Messages” instructions below.

NEW - Text Message - To start receiving text messages from our school for unexplained student absences, important school events, school closings and safety alerts, please refer to the “To Receive Text Messages” instructions below. The text message feature is to inform you of unexplained student absences and school related broadcast messages. Please do not text student absences to 978338. The text number 978338 can not receive absence messages. If your student is absent, please phone the school or send in a note.

If you currently receive student attendance and school broadcast phone messages for your Secondary School student, but you are not receiving email messages, please contact your Secondary school's Guidance Secretary / Student Services Secretary. They will require your child’s name, grade, your name, your email address and your consent to receive email messages.

Homework Policy

In November 2008, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board adopted a new board-wide Homework Policy and Procedures for Kindergarten to Grade 12 to be implemented in September 2009. The policy and procedures approach homework from a Catholic perspective that recognizes the importance of family time and honours the bonds between school, family and parish. As a community, we recognize that the stronger these bonds, the more effectively our students are able to learn and to develop the unique talents and gifts with which they are blessed.

Student Accident Insurance

Important notice to parents/ guardians regarding insurance for students who participate in out-of-school excursions and extra-curricular sports activities.

Ji8�� Board takes every precaution to provide a safe learning environment for students, however accidents can happen. When they do, injuries may involve medical, dental or other expenses that are not covered by provincial health care or employer group plans. Families may be surprised to find they must pay the cost of crutches, casts, splints or ambulance rides. As a parent, guardian or adult student, you are responsible for such expenses, which may result in financial hardship. Potential injuries could involve dental/ orthodontic treatments, ambulance expenses, crutches, casts, splints, physiotherapy, broken eye glasses, and prescription drug expenses.

As permitted under the Education Act, the Ji8�� provides student accident information, however the Board assumes no responsibility for the cost of the plan, applications, premium payments or claims; nor does the Board receive any remuneration from the Old Republic Insurance Company of Canada.

Ji8�� Board does not provide accident insurance coverage for student injuries that occur on school premises or during extra-curricular activities (e.g. athletics, clubs and field trips).

Please note that the Ji8�� requires that parents, guardians and adult students provide written acknowledgment that they have received student accident insurance information prior to a student’s participation in out-of-school excursions and/or extra-curricular sports activities.

If the student’s parent has purchased either the Silver, Gold or Platinum Plan for their child and that child is a full-time student, that child would have coverage for accidents occurring 24/7 during the period of coverage up to the limits of the policy purchased. The coverage under these plans is not restricted to school days/school activities.

Violence Threat Risk Assessment Protocol

All members of the Ji8�� community have the right to learn and work in a safe, caring and inclusive community under positive Catholic learning conditions. All staff and community partners work collaboratively to ensure the safety and well-being of students, staff and communities and to preserve the dignity of all staff and students. Under certain conditions, students may need to undergo a "Violence Threat Risk Assessment" when their behaviours confidently suggest they may be at risk of harming themselves or others.

Threat assessment is the process of determining if a threat-maker (someone who utters, writes, emails, and/or gestures a threat to harm a target or targets) actually poses a risk to the target or targets they have threatened.

In Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board all threat-making behaviours are reported to administration. Administration in consultation with their team will then discern whether or not to activate this protocol. Information is obtained from multiple sources to develop an intervention plan to reduce risk of violence. Catholic communities within Dufferin-Peel allow for students to grow, learn, reflect and work towards reconciliation with the appropriate supports.
